The Wonders of Ujjayi

Would you like to simultaneously relax and energize your mind and body?

Then the Ujjayi (pronounced oo-jai) breathing technique is the breath for you.

Written in Sanskrit, the name literally means "Victory over life force (/breath)".

Benefits of Ujjayi Breathing

There are MANY benefits to Ujjayi...

- Balances the entire cardiorespiratory system

- Releases feelings of irritation and frustration

- Helps calm the mind and body.

- Builds internal body heat and energy

- Increases feelings of presence, self-awareness, and meditative qualities

.- Great for developing focus

How to “Ujjayi”:

Let us start with some simple prep work.

1. Place a hand in front of your open mouth and imagine trying to fog up a mirror with your breath; like a long “huuuuuh”

2. Once comfortable with this breath work, close your mouth whilst continuing to breathe using the "huuuuh" breath). This will be coming in and out your nose now.

3. Doing Ujjayi correctly, it will feel soothing rather than constrictive, and create a gentle sea-wave like noise will emanate during both the inhale and exhale.

4. People tend to do three cycles of two minutes (so 6 minutes in total) but this is the sort of breath that you can do for extended periods of time. Just be mindful that all conscious breathing techniques have impact so be gentle as you begin and stay attuned to how you feel.

Good luck (and enjoy!).

I will be posting a video for this breath in the next week. If you have any questions, feel free to message.
